What a toolroom planning board is for
A toolroom planning board answers the question every toolroom lead gets asked before the first coffee: who is on which tool, and when will it be back in production. Most toolrooms answer it with a whiteboard, a spreadsheet and a few conversations, then lose the answer by Wednesday when two breakdowns arrive and the plan is rewritten in someone's head.
A board makes the plan visible. Rows are the people who can do the work, columns are the days you have, and every card is a piece of work with a tooling reference on it. It answers a different question from tool tracking: knowing where a die is stored is useful, knowing who is repairing it on Thursday is what keeps the press running.
Planning repairs and preventive maintenance in the same view
Breakdowns are loud and preventive maintenance is quiet, so the quiet work slips. When the 50,000 shot service sits on the same board as the ejector pin repair, competing for the same toolmaker on the same day, the trade is explicit. You either schedule the service or you consciously move it, and either way the board shows what you chose.
That is why this board carries two work types and labels them in words: job cards for reactive repairs and rework, preventive maintenance for scheduled service. Colour helps you scan, the label is what tells you which is which.
Who does what, and by when
Every card on this board has one owner and one day. That single constraint removes most of the confusion in a machine shop scheduling conversation, because unassigned work stays visibly unassigned in the pool instead of being assumed. The week total on each row and the total on each day column are there to show load, not to score anybody: four cards on one person on Wednesday reads heavy without the board inventing an hours model it does not have.
Print the sheet and pin it up if that is how your toolroom works. A printed plan that matches the board beats a shared file nobody opens on the shop floor.
From a demo board to a live one
On this page you type the work in yourself, and it lives in this browser until you clear it. On a live board the work is already there: job cards raised by the people who found the fault, preventive maintenance events raised by produced-part counts and service intervals, both carrying the tool they belong to. Nothing is retyped, so nothing quietly diverges from reality.
Assignments also stop being disposable. A live board keeps who was assigned, when it moved and when the work closed, which is the history a tool management software record needs when someone asks what happened to that mould in April. This page is a demo of the planning model, not of that record.
